1 Kezdetben volt az Ige, és az Ige Istennél volt, és az Ige Isten volt.2 Ő kezdetben Istennél volt.3 Minden általa lett, és nélküle semmi sem lett, ami létrejött.4 Benne élet volt, és az élet volt az emberek világossága.5 A világosság a sötétségben fénylik, de a sötétség nem fogadta be.6 Megjelent egy ember, akit Isten küldött, akinek a neve János.7 Ő tanúként jött, hogy bizonyságot tegyen a világosságról, hogy mindenki higgyen általa.8 Nem ő volt a világosság, de bizonyságot kellett tennie a világosságról.9 Az Ige volt az igazi világosság, amely megvilágosít minden embert: ő jött el a világba.10 A világban volt, és a világ általa lett, de a világ nem ismerte meg őt:11 a saját világába jött, de az övéi nem fogadták be őt.12 Akik pedig befogadták, azoknak hatalmat adott arra, hogy Isten gyermekeivé legyenek; mindazoknak, akik hisznek az ő nevében,13 akik nem vérből, sem a test, sem a férfi akaratából, hanem Istentől születtek.14 Az Ige testté lett, közöttünk lakott, és láttuk az ő dicsőségét, mint az Atya egyszülöttjének dicsőségét, telve kegyelemmel és igazsággal.15 János bizonyságot tett róla, és azt hirdette: Ő volt az, akiről megmondtam: Aki utánam jön, nagyobb nálam, mert előbb volt, mint én.16 Mi pedig valamennyien az ő teljességéből kaptunk kegyelmet kegyelemre.17 Mert a törvény Mózes által adatott, a kegyelem és az igazság Jézus Krisztus által jött el.18 Istent soha senki sem látta: az egyszülött Isten, aki az Atya kebelén van, az jelentette ki őt.19 János így tett bizonyságot, amikor a zsidók papokat és lévitákat küldtek hozzá Jeruzsálemből, hogy megkérdezzék tőle: Ki vagy te?20 Ő megvallotta, és nem tagadta. Ezt vallotta: Én nem a Krisztus vagyok.21 Erre megkérdezték tőle: Hát akkor? Te vagy Illés? Ő azt mondta: Nem az vagyok. – A próféta vagy? Így válaszolt: Nem.22 Ezt mondták tehát: Ki vagy? – hogy választ adhassunk azoknak, akik elküldtek minket: mit mondasz magadról?23 Erre ő így felelt: „Én kiáltó hang vagyok a pusztában: egyengessétek az Úr útját”, ahogyan Ézsaiás próféta megmondta.24 A küldöttek között voltak farizeusok is,25 és ezek tovább kérdezték őt: Miért keresztelsz hát, ha nem te vagy a Krisztus, sem Illés, sem pedig a próféta?26 János így válaszolt nekik: Én vízzel keresztelek. De közöttetek áll az, akit ti nem ismertek,27 aki utánam jön, és én arra sem vagyok méltó, hogy saruja szíját megoldjam.28 Ez Betániában történt, a Jordánon túl, ahol János keresztelt.29 Másnap János látta, hogy Jézus hozzá jön, és így szólt: Íme, az Isten Báránya, aki elveszi a világ bűnét!30 Ő az, akiről én megmondtam: Utánam jön egy férfi, aki nagyobb nálam, mert előbb volt, mint én.31 Én nem ismertem őt, de azért jöttem, és azért keresztelek vízzel, hogy ismertté legyen Izráel előtt.32 Így tett erről bizonyságot János: Láttam, hogy a Lélek leszállt az égből, mint egy galamb, és megnyugodott rajta.33 Én nem ismertem őt, de aki elküldött engem, hogy vízzel kereszteljek, ő mondta nekem: Akire látod, hogy leszáll a Lélek, és megnyugszik rajta, ő az, aki Szentlélekkel keresztel.34 Én láttam, és bizonyságot tettem arról, hogy ő az Isten Fia.35 Másnap ismét ott állt János két tanítványával együtt,36 és amikor megpillantotta Jézust, aki arra járt, így szólt: Íme, az Isten Báránya!37 Meghallotta a két tanítvány, hogy ő ezt mondta, és követték Jézust.38 Jézus megfordult, és amikor látta, hogy követik őt, megszólította őket: Mit kerestek? Jézus így válaszolt neki: Mielőtt Fülöp idehívott téged, láttam, hogy a fügefa alatt voltál.49 Nátánaél így szólt hozzá: Mester, te vagy az Isten Fia, te vagy Izráel királya!50 Jézus így válaszolt neki: Mivel azt mondtam neked, hogy láttalak a fügefa alatt, hiszel? Ennél nagyobb dolgokat fogsz látni.51 És hozzátette: Bizony, bizony, mondom nektek: meglátjátok a megnyílt eget és az Isten angyalait, amint felszállnak, és leszállnak az Emberfiára.

1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways,6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”10 And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?”11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.”14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ,16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door.34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,37 and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once,44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

1 Azokban a napokban kezdett Keresztelő János prédikálni Júdea pusztájában:2 Térjetek meg, mert elközelített a mennyek országa!3 Mert ő az, akiről Ézsaiás így prófétált: „Kiáltó szava hangzik a pusztában: Készítsétek az Úr útját, egyengessétek ösvényeit!”4 János teveszőr ruhát viselt, derekán pedig bőrövet, tápláléka sáska volt és vadméz.5 Akkor kiment hozzá Jeruzsálem, egész Júdea és a Jordán egész környéke;6 és amikor megvallották bűneiket, megkeresztelte őket a Jordán folyóban.7 Amikor pedig látta, hogy a farizeusok és szadduceusok közül sokan jönnek, hogy megkeresztelje őket, így szólt hozzájuk: Ti viperafajzatok! Ki figyelmeztetett titeket, hogy meneküljetek az eljövendő harag elől?8 Teremjetek hát megtéréshez illő gyümölcsöt,9 és ne gondoljátok, hogy ezt mondhatjátok magatokban: A mi atyánk Ábrahám! Mert mondom nektek, hogy Isten ezekből a kövekből is tud fiakat támasztani Ábrahámnak.10 A fejsze már a fák gyökerén van: ezért minden fa, amely nem terem jó gyümölcsöt, kivágatik, és tűzre vettetik.11 Én vízzel keresztellek titeket, hogy megtérjetek, de aki utánam jön, erősebb nálam, arra sem vagyok méltó, hogy a saruját vigyem. Ő majd Szentlélekkel és tűzzel keresztel titeket.12 Kezében szórólapát lesz, és megtisztítja szérűjét: csűrbe hordja gabonáját, a pelyvát pedig megégeti olthatatlan tűzzel.13 Akkor eljött Jézus Galileából a Jordán mellé Jánoshoz, hogy keresztelje meg őt.14 János azonban megpróbálta visszatartani őt: Nekem volna szükségem arra, hogy megkeresztelj, és te jössz hozzám?15 Jézus ezt válaszolta: Engedj most, mert így illik minden igazságot betöltenünk.
